Editing as a process of exploration and invitation

Gail Loane

This workshop will explore:

  • what ‘good writing’ looks like

  • teaching the mechanics of writing as a ‘creational activity’ rather than

  • ‘a correctional activity’ (Jeff Anderson)

  • why so many students dislike going back to revise their writing

  • editing - through exploration and invitation

  • the teaching of grammar and punctuation through rich texts

  • what we need to know about a sentence before we can teach it

  • ‘the helping circle’ as a daily forum for responding to the writing of others and for moments of explicit teaching

  • the ‘mini-lesson’ as a teacher’s response to student need

  • how texts may be used to support young writers become more aware of the effectiveness of their own writing, leading them to habits of noticing and proofreading/editing independently.
